Whenever you are marketing food products in India, at some point, someone will ask you for your FSSAI certificate. Be it a customer, a delivery company, your landlord, or an unexpected inspector. You will not have a pleasant conversation without it.
The good news is, getting an FSSAI certificate is not as difficult as it seems. The whole procedure is done online, and the rules were recently simplified in 2026. Most small businesses can get it done in no time if their papers are in order. The problem is that everyone seems to have different requirements for it, and there is no clear guidance as to what one actually needs to do to obtain it.
That is why we have put together this easy-to-follow guide that answers all the questions you might have. We have listed the goal and scope of the certificate, who needs it, what documents to prepare, a step-by-step instruction on filling out the application, the fees involved, and what you need to do after submitting the application. All of it is based on the latest guidelines issued in April 2026.

What Is an FSSAI Certificate?
FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and is the regulatory body that oversees and develops food safety rules in the country. The certificate issued by the authority is the document that proves a particular business has been registered or licensed by FSSAI. The certificate includes a unique 14-digit number, which can also be seen on the packages of food items and shopboards.
In short, the FSSAI certificate assures customers that a certain business is registered, traceable, and responsible for the safety of its products.
The terms “FSSAI license,” “FSSAI registration,” and “FSSAI certificate” often are used interchangeably, although they may slightly differ. We will discuss the differences in the following section.
Who Needs an FSSAI Certificate?
Pretty much anyone who makes, stores, sells, distributes, or imports food. That includes:
- Restaurants, cafes, dhabas, and caterers
- Home bakers, tiffin services, and cloud kitchens
- Kirana stores, grocery shops, and wholesalers
- Food manufacturers, packers, and processors
- Street food vendors, who follow simpler rules
- Sellers on online food platforms
- Importers and exporters of food products
If food is part of your business, assume you need one, then work out which type. Being small or home-based doesn’t exempt you. It just usually puts you in the simplest category.
Types of FSSAI Certificate
There are three types, and your annual turnover decides most of the choice. FSSAI revised the limits from 1 April 2026:
| Type | Annual turnover (from 1 April 2026) | Issued by |
| Basic Registration | Up to ₹1.5 crore | Local registering authority |
| State License | Above ₹1.5 crore, up to ₹50 crore | State food safety authority |
| Central License | Above ₹50 crore | FSSAI at the central level |
Many older websites still show ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore. Those numbers no longer apply to new applications.
Turnover isn’t the whole story. Some kinds of business need a higher category regardless of sales. Food importers, for example, generally need a central license. If you’re not sure where you fit, read our guide on FSSAI Registration vs. State vs. Central License, or just ask us.
Eligibility: Who Can Apply?
There’s no exam, no minimum qualification, and no age trick here. If you run a food business in India, you can apply. You can be a proprietor, a partnership firm, an LLP, a company, or a trust. The application is made in the name of the business, and the person applying needs a valid ID and a working mobile number and email.
What really matters is applying for the right category. Your turnover, the kind of food activity you do and the location of your premises all decide that.
Documents Required for an FSSAI Certificate
The list depends on your category. Here’s what’s usually asked for.
For Basic Registration, the list is short:
- A photo ID of the applicant, such as Aadhaar, PAN, or voter ID
- A passport-size photograph
- Proof of your business address, like a rent agreement, an electricity bill, or an ownership paper
- A short declaration with your business details
For a state or central license, expect more:
- A photo ID and photograph of the owner, partners, or directors
- Business constitution papers, such as a partnership deed, certificate of incorporation, or MoA and AoA
- Proof of the premises
- A layout plan and equipment list for manufacturing and processing units
- A water test report, where the activity needs one
- A nomination of the person responsible for food safety compliance
- A food safety management plan
- An import/export code, if you import or export
Requirements can change with your kind of business, so confirm the exact list on FoSCoS before you start. A missing paper is the most common reason an application gets stuck.
Step-by-Step: How to Apply for an FSSAI Certificate
- Decide your category. Check your turnover and your kind of business, and work out whether you need FSSAI Basic Registration, a FSSAI State License, or a Central License.
- Create or log in to your FoSCoS account. FoSCoS is FSSAI’s online licensing portal, and you’ll find it at foscos.fssai.gov.in.
- Start a new application. Choose the option for a new license or registration, then pick the category you decided on.
- Fill in the form. Registration uses Form A, and licenses use Form B. You’ll enter business details, address, the kind of business, and the food categories you deal in.
- Upload your documents. Keep the files clear, readable, and in the format the portal asks for.
- Pay the government fee online. Your application moves forward once payment is done.
- Wait for review. The authority checks your file and may ask questions. For some licenses, it may also inspect your premises.
- Download your FSSAI Certificate. Once approved, it’s available on the portal under your account.
It sounds simple, and it is, as long as each detail matches across your documents. Names, addresses, and spellings need to be the same everywhere.
FSSAI Certificate Fees
The government fee depends on the category and on your kind of business. These figures are a rough guide, so check the current amount on FoSCoS when you apply:
| Type | Typical government fee (per year) |
| Basic Registration | ₹100 |
| State License | ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 |
| Central License | ₹7,500 |
Two things are worth knowing. First, certificates issued on or after 1 April 2026 no longer expire, but the annual fee hasn’t disappeared. If the fee goes unpaid, the certificate can be suspended. You can also pay for more than one year at a time, which saves you from tracking a date every year. Second, if you hire a consultant, their professional fee is separate from the government fee.
How Long Does It Take, and How Long Does It Last?
Basic registration is usually the quickest. State and central licenses commonly take around a month or more because of document checks and possible inspections. A complete and correct application is the best way to avoid delays.
On validity, FSSAI’s own FAQ on the 2026 changes says certificates issued on or after 1 April 2026 have perpetual validity. In plain words, they stay valid unless they’re suspended, cancelled, or surrendered. If your certificate was issued earlier, check its expiry date on FoSCoS and follow the rules that apply to it.
Perpetual doesn’t mean carefree. Inspections, suspension, and other action can still happen if you don’t follow the rules.
What to Do After You Get Your FSSAI Certificate
Getting the certificate is the beginning of compliance, not the end. Here’s what to keep in mind:
- Display it. Keep the certificate in a visible place on your premises.
- Use your number. Print your 14-digit FSSAI number, along with the FSSAI logo, on packaged food labels. Many businesses also add it to invoices and menus.
- Pay the annual fee on time, or pay several years in advance.
- Keep hygiene and records in order. Clean premises, trained staff, and proper records make inspections painless.
- Update changes. If your address, business name, or product category changes, your certificate needs updating. Our guide on types of FSSAI modifications explains how.
- Check your new products. A certificate covers your business, not every product. If you’re launching something novel, you may also need Food Product Approval.
Mistakes That Slow People Down
We see the same errors again and again:
- Using old limits. Applying on the basis of ₹12 lakh or ₹20 crore numbers from older blogs.
- Choosing the wrong category. This usually means rejection or a fresh application.
- Mismatched details. A shop name spelled two ways, or an address that differs between documents.
- Blurry or incomplete uploads. Poor scans lead to queries and weeks of back-and-forth.
- Treating perpetual validity as zero responsibility. The annual fee and the rules still apply.
- Starting business first. Running without a valid certificate can lead to heavy penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act, including fines that run into lakhs and, in serious cases, imprisonment.
How FSSAI Certificate Can Help
Most people have no problem with the idea of the FSSAI Certificate. It is the details that make it so hard: what category do I apply for? What documents do I need? What form? Why is the portal rejecting my file?
We at FSSAICertificate.com take time to understand your business before confirming your category and document verification before uploading anything.
We file the application, track it, and answer any queries from the authority. You get clear updates in plain language, and you’re never left guessing what’s happening with your file.
We also help with the things that come next, like modifications, annual fee tracking, and food product approval for new products. You can see everything on our services page or start with our FSSAI registration service.
Conclusion
An FSSAI Certificate is the key to conducting business transparently and without restriction; it is also an important tool for gaining the trust of customers. Fortunately, obtaining this certificate has become much easier: norms for turnover are higher, new certificates are no longer subject to expiration, and the procedure itself is now fully digital.
Nevertheless, one must not be deceived by the ease of the process: several details are of great importance when applying. Firstly, one must choose the appropriate category of the certificate and follow all formatting requirements when preparing documents. Secondly, one must budget for annual fees and renewals. Finally, it is necessary to update and re-register the certificate if the company data changes. All of the above will help avoid inconveniences caused by incorrect applications to FSSAI.
